Dynamics, Equations and Applications

DEA 2019

In September 2019, the Faculty of Applied Mathematics organized the conference Dynamics, Equations, and Applications (DEA 2019) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the AGH University of Krakow. The event was initiated by Krzysztof Ciepliński from the Department of Differential Equations (DDE), in collaboration with Ilona Michalik, Elżbieta Adamus, Tomasz Drwięga, Rafał Kapica, Anna Pudełko, and Tomasz Zabawa (all but one of whom were DDE staff members at the time).

The conference brought together 444 scientists from approximately 270 universities and research institutes across 50 countries, with more than 80% of participants coming from abroad (including 51 from the USA, 45 from the UK, and 41 from France). The world’s leading universities were well represented. DEA 2019 also welcomed 83 researchers from 22 Polish universities and the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The programme featured 413 presentations, including a public lecture by Alessio Figalli, six plenary lectures, and 38 talks in four main thematic sessions; the remaining presentations were delivered in 16 parallel sessions. More than 50 DEA 2019 speakers had previously presented at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), the world’s most prestigious mathematical conference. Five plenary lecturers — Artur Avila, Alessio Figalli, Martin Hairer, Stanislav Smirnov, and Shing-Tung Yau — were Fields Medal recipients (three years later, the medal was also awarded to Hugo Duminil-Copin, who had given a talk in the main session on applications of mathematics at DEA 2019).

This was only the second event of its kind ever held in Poland, and the first since the ICM in Warsaw in 1983, organized by the Polish mathematical community under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union. DEA 2019 was undoubtedly one of the most significant mathematical events worldwide that year.

During the conference, the organizers were supported by many students and staff members from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, including a large team from the DDE.

DEA 2027

At the turn of June and July 2027, the Faculty of Applied Mathematics is planning to organize the second edition of the Dynamics, Equations and Applications conference (DEA 2027). The ten-member organizing committee of DEA 2027 includes six staff members from the DDE: Krzysztof Ciepliński (chair), Agnieszka Kowalik, Ilona Michalik (vice-chair), Paweł Potorski, Patryk Sitko, and Tomasz Zabawa (vice-chair).

The conference programme will feature ten one-hour plenary lectures and forty 40-minute invited talks across four main thematic sessions (sections): Dynamics, PDEs, Number Theory, and Probability (ten talks in each section). Additionally, the scientific programme will include 16 parallel sessions.

The following distinguished mathematicians have tentatively agreed to deliver plenary lectures at DEA 2027: Artur Avila, Martin Hairer, Pierre-Louis Lions, Akshay Venkatesh (all Fields Medal recipients), Alex Eskin, Adam Kanigowski, Jean-François Le Gall, Sylvia Serfaty, and Peter Sarnak. The highest level of expertise will also be represented by the sectional speakers; one of them, in the PDEs section, will be Jacek Jendrej from the DDE.
